Britney Jean Spears, nata il 2 dicembre 1981 a Kentwood, in Louisiana, è una delle artiste femminili di maggiore successo nella storia della musica: ha venduto più di 88 milioni di dischi (31 milioni negli Stati Uniti). Anche il pubblico dei suoi fans va quantificato in milioni e la sua notorietà si estende a tutti i continenti.
Alla fine del 1998 Spears debuttò con il singolo "...Baby One More Time", il cui video fu tra i più trasmessi dall'emittente televisiva musicale MTV. Il successo fu immediato e la canzone fu premiata con un doppio disco di platino negli Stati Uniti; 9 milioni le copie vendute. Un anno dopo uscì il primo album, con lo stesso titolo, che negli USA è stato premiato con 14 dischi di platino. Nel maggio del 2000 fu pubblicato l’album "Oops!... I Did It Again", che negli USA arrivò al primo posto in classifica e vendette nella prima settimana 1 milione 319.193 copie (record imbattuto per un album solista).
Nel febbraio del 2002 partecipò come protagonista al film Crossroads. Un mese dopo terminò la sua relazione, durata quattro anni, con il cantante Justin Timberlake che, nella canzone "Cry me a river" e nel relativo video, lasciò intuire di essere stato tradito. La cantante rispose dichiarando: "Non dico tecnicamente che stia sbagliando, ma nemmeno che abbia ragione."
Il 9 settembre 2007, agli MTV Video Music Awards ha presentato ufficialmente il nuovo singolo, "Gimme More", primo estratto dall'album "Blackout". L'esibizione della cantante si è rivelata deludente a causa di una coreografia scoordinata e di un lipsynch fuori sincrono. Sembra che il flop della Spears sia da imputare anche ad un tacco rottosi ad inizio canzone ed voci relative ai propri figli ascoltate poco prima dell'esibizione. Va comunque sottolineato che, nel corso del 2007, la reginetta del pop ha vissuto un periodo travagliato: la stampa ha parlato di notto brave con Paris Hilton, di droga ed alcol, di cliniche per la disintossicazione abbandonate dopo pochi giorni (molti ricorderanno le foto di Britney Spears senza capelli, dopo che da un parrucchiere si era da sola rasata a zero la chioma). Sempre nel corso dell'anno, le è stato revocato l'affidamento dei figli avuti da Kevin Federline, rapper, ballerino e modello da cui ha divorziato nel 2006: Sean Preston nato il 14 settembre 2005 e Jayden James nato 12 settembre 2006.
